When Apple unveiled its new touchscreen MacBook Pro, I was intrigued. Apple’s response to people asking for a touchscreen-enabled MacBook used to be that macOS was never built to support touch interface.

I’ve used plenty of touchscreen Windows laptops over the years, but I didn’t expect to pay nearly $3,000 for Apple’s own take on such a notebook. Then I came across a video from developer @pikacodes on X, and suddenly, I could see a genuinely compelling reason for the upgrade.

The video shows a small space shooter running inside Xcode’s iPhone simulator on the new MacBook Pro. The developer interacts with the game directly using the touchscreen, with the development environment sitting alongside it.

It looks wonderfully simple, almost like someone playing an iPhone game on an oversized screen. So the potential here for app developers has me really excited.

Apple’s touchscreen could be a developer’s dream

One of the more frustrating parts of developing smartphone apps is testing whether touch interactions actually work as intended. Yeah, development environments like Xcode and Android Studio have simulators that let developers inspect interfaces, navigate menus, and test different screen sizes. But interacting with a simulated touchscreen using a mouse or trackpad isn’t as intuitive.

Consider someone building a diary app with realistic page-turning animations for a foldable phone. They can inspect the interface in Android Studio, but judging whether those swipes respond naturally often requires testing on the actual device.

Picture adjusting a swipe animation, trying out the app, or just testing out a change immediately. All of this can now run seamlessly, without having to constantly switch between a laptop and a phone. Many devs would find this one of the best improvements to their workflows, at least with the newer MacBook Pros.

A small convenience with enormous potential

Just remember that this isn’t something that will be universally appreciated. Xcode is designed for Apple’s platforms, so Android developers won’t automatically get the same functionality. Google’s Android Studio already supports wireless device debugging, but native touchscreen interaction with its macOS emulator would be a welcome addition.

Apple also has some software work ahead. Xcode 27’s existing Device Hub documentation lists limitations with two-finger touch simulation, making the upcoming touchscreen-focused tooling kind of necessary. Also, regardless of how good the simulator becomes, developers will still need physical devices to assess real-world performance, haptics, and interaction accuracy.

Even then, I can see why this would appeal to developers who spend hours refining the smallest details of their apps. The same touchscreen could also benefit designers working with 3D models, musicians controlling virtual instruments, and creators manipulating visual elements directly.

At $2,899, Apple’s touchscreen MacBook Pro remains an expensive purchase. But watching someone interact with an iPhone app directly inside Xcode made me appreciate the upgrade from an entirely different perspective.
