Samsung has been steadily turning its wearables into health companions, and its latest update is a big one. The company’s upgraded Sleep Apnea feature has arrived on both Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Ring.

The rollout comes after the US FDA cleared the feature in July, and Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) gave it the green light as well. Samsung also gets bragging rights here, as it is the first company to bring sleep apnea risk detection to a smart ring.

What’s new with Samsung’s sleep apnea feature?

The original feature only told you whether you were at risk. The upgraded version, found in the Samsung Health Monitor app, studies your vitals more closely overnight and now tells you how severe your breathing interruptions are.

That extra detail can be really helpful when you visit your doctor, as you will walk in with real data instead of guesses.

The feature already has a strong track record. Back in February 2024, its first version earned FDA De Novo authorization, making it the first wearable tool of its kind to flag possible moderate or severe sleep apnea.

Why does the Galaxy Ring matter here?

Not everyone enjoys sleeping with a smartwatch on their wrist. The Galaxy Ring is light and comfortable, so you are far more likely to keep it on every night. Better yet, it doesn’t need weeks of data. Just two nights of sleep tracking over any 10 days is enough to get useful results.

The Samsung Galaxy Ring on someone's hand.

“We are giving people the tools to help spot possible early signs of sleep apnea and take charge of their wellbeing,” said Jongmin Choi, Head of Health R&D Group, Mobile eXperience (MX) Business, Samsung Electronics.

What it means for you

If you own a Galaxy Watch or Galaxy Ring, this is one feature worth turning on. You can use whichever device you’re more comfortable sleeping with, and Samsung plans to bring the feature to more countries over time.
