Marvel just dropped the first trailer for X-Men ’97 season 2, confirming it will premiere on Disney+ on July 1. The first season launched back in March 2024 and became one of the best X-Men adaptations ever made. Season 2 has a lot to live up to, and from the looks of this trailer, it is ready for the challenge.
What to expect from X-Men ’97 season 2?
The season picks up with the X-Men scattered across different time periods, desperately trying to find their way back to the 1990s. Meanwhile, back in the decade they left behind, suspicious foes and rising mutant intolerance are filling the vacuum left by their absence.
The big villain reveal is Apocalypse, and the season appears heavily inspired by the iconic Age of Apocalypse comic storyline, which is one of the most beloved and brutal arcs in X-Men history.
If you are not familiar, Age of Apocalypse is a landmark 1995 Marvel Comics event where Apocalypse takes over North America, and the X-Men exist in a completely alternate, darker timeline.
The trailer also packs in over thirty new and returning mutants, along with a stack of Easter eggs for longtime fans, including a glimpse at Weapon Plus. The full voice cast returns, including Ray Chase, Jennifer Hale, Alison Sealy-Smith, Cal Dodd, and others.
What else should you know before X-Men ’97 season 2 premieres?
Wolverine is back with his adamantium claws fully intact, which is a big deal given Magneto ripped them clean out at the end of season 1 in a scene pulled directly from the 1993 Fatal Attractions comic arc.
Rogue is still grieving Gambit’s death, and the trailer also teases a brief Deadpool appearance, though it turns out to be Morph taking his form. Meanwhile, Bishop and Forge are on a mission to get everyone back to the 90s.
There is more to look forward to as Marvel has also confirmed that VisionQuest, the WandaVision spin-off starring Paul Bettany, is hitting Disney Plus on October 14.
