Tesla’s top rival launches EV battery tech promising full charge in about 10 minutes

Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has unveiled a major breakthrough in EV battery technology that could dramatically reduce charging times. The company introduced its second-generation Blade Battery alongside new “Flash Charging” technology, claiming compatible electric vehicles could charge from 10% to 70% in about five minutes and up to 97% in roughly nine minutes.

The announcement positions BYD as one of the key challengers to Tesla in the race to make electric vehicles as convenient as gasoline-powered cars.

A Breakthrough in EV Charging Speed

The new battery system is part of BYD’s next-generation Blade Battery 2.0, which improves energy density, charging speed, and thermal management compared to the previous generation. The company says the upgraded battery can also operate efficiently in extreme conditions, charging from 20% to 97% in under 12 minutes even at temperatures as low as –20°C.

Blade Battery 2.0 is based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry but incorporates a redesigned structure that increases energy density and durability while lowering production costs. The battery can support extremely high charging rates, enabling the ultra-fast “Flash Charging” capability that BYD demonstrated during the launch event.

The technology will first appear in high-end vehicles such as the Yangwang U7, which is expected to offer a driving range of more than 1,000 kilometers on a single charge under CLTC testing standards.

Charging speed has long been one of the biggest barriers to wider EV adoption

While modern electric cars have improved battery range significantly, charging times often remain longer than refueling a gasoline vehicle. BYD’s new battery and megawatt charging system aim to narrow that gap. The company’s “Flash Charging” network can deliver extremely high power levels that make ultra-fast charging possible. In some demonstrations, the technology can add hundreds of kilometers of range in just a few minutes.

If the technology proves reliable at scale, it could significantly reduce range anxiety and make EV charging stops much shorter.

For EV owners, faster charging could transform the driving experience

Instead of waiting 30 minutes or more for a typical fast charge, drivers may only need a few minutes to add substantial range to their vehicles. This improvement could make electric cars far more practical for long-distance travel and daily use, especially in regions where charging infrastructure is still developing.

In addition, BYD’s Blade battery technology is designed to improve safety and longevity, addressing common concerns about battery degradation and overheating. BYD plans to support the new battery technology with a large expansion of ultra-fast charging infrastructure. The company has announced plans to build around 20,000 flash charging stations across China by the end of 2026, with thousands already under construction.

As automakers around the world compete to accelerate EV adoption, breakthroughs in battery technology like this could play a crucial role. If BYD’s ultra-fast charging system becomes widely available, it could push the entire industry – including Tesla and other EV leaders – to move faster toward truly gas-station-like charging speeds.
