During a surprise Nintendo Direct today, legendary designers Shigeru Miyamoto and Yoshiaki Koizumi announced a Switch 2 remake of Star Fox 64. The news comes hot on the heels of Fox McCloud’s appearance in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
Players will visit iconic locations from the Nintendo 64 classic Star Fox 64, including difficulty settings and a variety of stages, including Landmaster, Blue Marine, and All-Range Mode sequences. Stage layouts are the same from Star Fox 64, but the dialogue, graphics, and character designs have been completely revamped. Star Fox will also include all new cutscenes. Players can also tackle challenge missions with new tasks in each mission that you won’t find in the standard game. These missions will be available in Normal or Expert mode. And since it’s on the Switch 2, you can play using Mouse Controls, including co-op play where one plays on one Joy-Con as the pilot, and the other uses the Mouse Controls as the gunner. The game even supports the N64 controller (the Switch version) for a more nostalgic experience.
But it’s not just the single-player mode, as Battle Mode returns from Star Fox 64. Here, players can battle it out as either Star Fox or Star Wolf on Corneria, Fichina, and Sector Y. These matches can be played either through matchmaking or in private matches. And true to Star Fox 64, you can play Battle Mode using local GameShare. You can also use GameChat with the game, including a character avatar feature that makes your on-camera appearance look like a Star Fox character of your choice.
We don’t have long to wait before the Star Fox franchise returns, as Star Fox arrives on Switch 2 on June 25.
