Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 8 foldable could sleep on big camera upgrades

If you’ve been eagerly waiting for the Galaxy Z Flip 8, hoping Samsung would upgrade the camera setup on the flip phone, there’s some bad news. According to Dutch publication Galaxy Club, the Flip 8 (which should launch alongside the Fold 8) will retain the same camera setup as the Flip 7.

For those catching up, the Flip 7 features a dual-camera array on the back (or on its cover screen), comprising a 50MP (f/1.8) primary camera and a 12MP (f/2.2) ultrawide camera. On the inner screen, the flip phone features a 10MP (f/2.2) selfie shooter.

It ain’t broke, so Samsung won’t fix it

If the report is anything to go by, the Flip 8 could show up later this year with the same three cameras we’ve seen on the Flip 7. What’s even more interesting (and disappointing) is that Samsung used the same camera setup on the Flip 6.

So, if you’re using the Flip 6 or the Flip 7 and planning to upgrade to the 2026 Flip phone, cameras might not be the reason to upgrade.

Now, there’s a slight chance that Samsung might tweak the camera sensor, perhaps increasing its size or aperture, effectively improving the overall picture and video quality it delivers.

I’d say this could happen, especially since the company is doing something similar with the Galaxy S26 Ultra: the same primary camera as the S25 Ultra, but with a wider aperture. This remains a conjecture at the moment.

Flip 7 on side

The update didn’t surprise me, though, especially since the Flip 8 is said to debut at the same price as the Flip 7, i.e., $1,099.99 for the baseline 256GB variant and $1,219.99 for the 512GB storage variant.

Given the rising costs of memory and components, it’s almost certain Samsung will skip non-essential upgrades on the Flip 8. In fact, I’m expecting the flip phone to borrow most of its specifications from the Flip 7, including the displays, cameras, and battery.

What might change, however, is the chipset. Rumors indicate that the Flip 8 could feature Samsung’s Exynos 2600 chipset, the first smartphone chip to be based on 2nm fabrication technology. However, more details about the mid-year Galaxy Unpacked event, including the date and time, remain under wraps.
