When Samsung fans debate next-generation performance, the conversation often centers on the processor. However, a new leak suggests that the Galaxy S27 series could get a substantial speed boost from somewhere that isn’t as glamorous or popular: its storage.

According to a Korean blog post, Samsung is considering UFS 5.0, the next generation of Universal Flash Storage, for its lineup. But, like all good things, the rumor comes with a catch. The faster storage might only be available on select Galaxy S27 models, not the entire lineup.

What makes UFS 5.0 such a big deal?

Currently, the Galaxy S26 lineup comes with UFS 4.0 storage, which provides up to 4.2GB/s of data transfer speeds, regardless of the model you pick. While UFS 4.0 is already quite fast, some smartphones like the OnePlus 15 already offer UFS 4.1 storage, which offers an interactive yet impactful boost to the storage read/write speeds.

UFS 5.0 chips, on the other hand, are expected to deliver sequential read speeds of up to 10.8GB/s, which is more than twice the theoretical limit of UFS 4.0. In other words, the UFS 5.0 storage on select Galaxy S27 models could bring their read/write speed in the same ballpark as high-end desktop PCIe Gen 4 SSDs.

Faster storage on the Galaxy S27 could unlock snappier app launches, quicker image processing, and stronger on-device AI performance without requiring outsourcing heavy features to the cloud.

Why won’t every Galaxy S27 get UFS 5.0 storage?

It’s more about the component cost than Samsung’s intention to provide its users with an upgrade. Citing rising memory prices and higher mass-production costs, the leak claims the exceptional storage upgrade could be reserved for premium configurations.

I’m thinking the 512GB variants of the top-tier Ultra and the Plus variants, but it would be a welcome addition if the baseline Galaxy S27 also gets UFS 5.0 storage on its 512GB version. Crucially, there might not be an upgrade in the “basic capacity configuration,” which isn’t exactly crystal clear, but likely means that the lineup will stick with 256GB of storage across its base models.
