The rumor mill offered a glimpse into Samsung’s foldable ambitions last month, with a report suggesting the company is working on a new foldable phone designed to deliver a tablet-like experience. This device is expected to take on the upcoming iPhone Fold, which is also rumored to feature a shorter, wider design. Although Samsung has yet to share any details about the so-called “Wide Fold,” the company has confirmed a new foldable phone is in development and set to arrive later this year.

Samsung’s plans were revealed during its Q4 2025 earnings call, where the company acknowledged the ongoing pressures from rising component prices. While outlining its growth strategy for 2026, Charles Hur, Executive Vice President of Samsung Display, said the company plans to lean on its AI technology leadership and stable supply chain to drive growth this year.

Following the launch of the Galaxy S26 series in the first quarter, Samsung expects to “drive revenue growth through sustained sales of foldables, which are showing strong sales momentum.” Later in the second half of 2026, the company plans to “launch a new foldable product with enhanced competitiveness to pursue further growth.”

This new foldable product could be the rumored “Wide Fold”

While Samsung didn’t share any details during the earnings call, the new foldable could be the same “Wide Fold” device that leaked last month. According to the leak, the device could feature a 7.6-inch foldable display with a 4:3 aspect ratio, making it shorter and wider than the Galaxy Z Fold 7. By comparison, Apple’s upcoming iPhone Fold is rumored to feature a 7.69-inch foldable display with the same aspect ratio.

On the outside, Samsung’s new foldable is said to include a 5.4-inch cover screen, making it slightly larger than the iPhone Fold’s rumored 4.75-inch outer display. The Wide Fold is also tipped to support 25W wireless charging and could launch alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Flip 8 this fall.

Samsung has already expanded its foldable lineup with the launch of the Galaxy Z TriFold, which goes on sale in the US tomorrow at an eye-watering $2,899. With another foldable product reportedly in the works, Samsung could be looking to broaden its offerings even further, and the company’s promise of “enhanced competitiveness” suggests it may not be quite as hard on the wallet.
