Following the recent debut of its Comet browser on Android, Perplexity has now rolled out a major update for its iPad app. The update brings a significant overhaul, including a redesigned interface that makes the app feel native to the iPad rather than a blown-up iPhone app.

According to Bloomberg, the revamped iPad app features a larger side panel that makes better use of the extra screen space and lets users quickly switch between recent threads, spaces, and other tools. It also supports features like split-screen for improved multitasking. These improvements reflect Perplexity’s goal of positioning the iPad app as a serious productivity tool rather than a simple mobile adaptation.

The update also places greater emphasis on Perplexity’s research feature, which offers students and professionals more citations than standard search. This appears to be a deliberate push to appeal to users who need citations, detailed answers, and workflows that go beyond one-off queries. It signals a shift toward a more professional audience that values depth and reliability.

The redesign could boost paid subscriptions

Although a Perplexity spokesperson said the redesign “came in response to increased usage from business users,” the focus on research also seems aimed at growing the paid subscriber base. That’s because the reasearch feature’s full capabilities are unlocked on the paid tiers.

With this overhaul, the iPad app now feels more like a purpose-built research companion, capable of handling serious work. For users who rely on the iPad app for studying, reports, or professional research, this update makes Perplexity a more compelling choice. If that sounds like you, you can now download the revamped app from the Apple App Store.
