OpenAI is making a few changes to how ChatGPT handles conversations and more complicated work. The company is now planning to merge the Chat and Work tabs into a single experience, allowing users to ask questions and get things done without having to switch between different tabs. The change will initially be available to select users before a wider rollout.
For the unaware, Anthropic made a similar change to Claude back in September, when it merged the Chat and Cowork functions into one screen.
ChatGPT is getting rid of the separate Work tab
At the moment, ChatGPT offers two separate tabs for Chat and Work. The former handles regular conversations, answering questions, and brainstorming. Work, on the other hand, is meant for more complicated tasks like researching topics, creating presentations, building websites, and more.
Under the new arrangement, users will be able to start a conversation and then ask ChatGPT to carry out the work from the same place. Moreover, they can also bring in files and plugins, and have ChatGPT work on different projects while keeping an eye on the progress. The change should also help with keeping track of projects, instead of jumping between different tabs depending on the task.

Codex is not going anywhere
For users who rely on Codex for programming, OpenAI is keeping it as a separate experience in the desktop app. However, there is also a change coming to how the usage limits work.
Starting in December, ChatGPT and Codex will share the same usage allowance for Plus, Pro, and Business subscribers. OpenAI says most users won’t notice a difference, but some might need to wait for their limits to reset more frequently, depending on the model and usage. Regular Instant chats won’t count toward the shared allowance. OpenAI hasn’t shared an exact date for the wider release of the combined Chat and Work experience.
