Motorola could be adopting Qi2 wireless charging technology, joining Google Pixels and Apple iPhones for magnetic charging support. While Android’s Qi2 rollout has been oddly frustrating, the company’s upcoming Edge phone could be the first to bring it to a non-flagship model.

A Wireless Power Consortium listing has revealed the Motorola Edge 70 Max, while another leak has revealed more details regarding its specs and features. We also get a look at some of the leaked promo material that shows magnetic Qi2 in action.

This is the Qi2 phone Android should have had already

Apple made MagSafe feel normal years ago. On Android, many phones still rely on “Qi2-ready” workarounds where the magnets come from a case rather than the phone itself. Only the Pixel 10 series set itself apart with built-in magnets. Now, the WPC certification reveals that the Motorola Edge 70 Max is arriving with 25W wireless charging, along with support for the growing Qi2 accessory ecosystem.

For a premium midrange phone, that could be a real differentiator. Wireless charging alone is nice. Magnetic wireless charging is more useful because it changes how people actually use accessories. Magnets allow for better alignment, which helps power banks stick properly. Even a desk stand holds onto the device better, while car mounts become more viable. Another example is camera grips and other snap-on attachments.

What does the leak reveal?

The Motorola Edge 70 Max might be positioned as a premium mid-range phone, sitting right under the flagship Motorola Signature and Motorola Razr Fold. According to Digital Citizen, the device will pack the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, a 50MP main camera with a Sony Lytia sensor, a rugged MIL-STD-810H-certified chassis, and color options including green, light blue, and black. This also means that its pricing would be higher than the typical Edge series phone.
