Meta is finally rolling out a fix for that, and honestly, it sounds like a genuine game-changer for anyone who wears their smart glasses daily. They are calling it “Conversation Focus,” and it is currently hitting the Early Access channel for Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta HSTN users in the US and Canada.
This isn’t just a simple volume boost. Think of it less like a hearing aid and more like a zoom lens for your ears. The feature uses the microphones built into the frames to isolate the audio coming from directly in front of you while suppressing the background clutter. So, instead of amplifying the entire room—clinking glasses, the espresso machine, and the loud guy three tables over—it creates a sort of “audio tunnel” between you and the person you’re looking at.

It’s a bit of a marketing buzzword, sure, but the tech behind it is solid. It differs pretty significantly from what you might get with the AirPods Pro 2’s hearing features. While Apple’s approach is great for general environmental amplification or clinical-grade hearing assistance, Meta is banking on directional focus. You have to be facing the person for it to work, and they need to be within arm’s reach or so (about six feet).
Using it seems pretty seamless, too. You don’t need to fumble with a phone app in the middle of a conversation. You can just say, “Hey Meta, start conversation focus,” or use a long-press gesture on the glasses’ touchpad. I love that they included a physical gesture because shouting voice commands in a quiet-but-busy cafe can sometimes feel just as awkward as not hearing the person.

Until now, the selling point has mostly been “take photos without your phone” or “ask AI a random question.” Those are fun, but they are novelties. This is different. This is a utility feature that actually solves a human problem. It pushes the device into the realm of accessibility tools without feeling clinical.

Just keep in mind, this is still in Early Access for a reason. Meta is pretty clear that this isn’t magic—it won’t help you have a whisper-quiet chat in the middle of a rock concert.
