Mario Paint Hits Nintendo Switch Online SNES Library, But You’ll Need A Mouse To Play

Mario Paint is now available for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. First released in 1992 for the Super Nintendo, the beloved art creation game allows players to create digital artworks, compose music, create custom animations, and more.

The game combines multiple creative applications, such as its titular digital painting application that lets you create custom artworks using a variety of tools or fill in coloring book images. Outside of painting, Mario Paint features minigames, a music composition tool (which players have used to recreate countless real-life songs), a stamp designer for creating custom game sprites, and even animation software. All of these features can be combined to create a single scene.

Mario Paint required a mouse to play (such as the Super NES Mouse that was packaged with it), and that remains the case here. Switch 2 players can use the Joy-Con 2’s mouse functionality to play, while Switch 1 owners can plug in a compatible USB mouse.

To mark the occasion, the Nintendo Music app now features a selection of Mario Paint tracks, such as Title Theme 2, Gnat Attack: Level 1, and Drawing Board 3.

For more on Mario Paint, check out this 2015 interview with Nintendo on how the game influenced the creation of Super Mario Maker.
