Amazon has given Kindle Unlimited a new name, and the update brings more than a plus sign. The subscription is now Kindle+, keeping its $11.99 monthly US price while adding thousands of audiobooks to the catalog, including titles narrated by AI. You’ll still have access to ebooks, comics, manga, and magazines, with companion audio available for thousands of ebooks.

So what’s new in Kindle+ subscription?

The core reading experience remains the same. Subscribers can borrow up to 20 digital books, audiobooks, or comics at a time, return them whenever they like, and borrow replacements without due dates.

Kindle+ still has nothing to do with Amazon Prime, so it remains its own separate purchase. You can read or listen on a Kindle device or through the free Kindle app on a phone, tablet, computer, or the web.

The biggest change here is Virtual Voice, Amazon’s AI narration tool that lets Kindle Direct Publishing authors create audiobooks without hiring a human narrator, and it’s completely free to use.

New titles enrolled in KDP Select will automatically become eligible for Virtual Voice narration. Authors can also choose to add AI narration to books they’ve already published. Some of these AI narrated titles are now part of the expanded Kindle+ catalog, according to ZDNet.

If you’d rather stick with traditionally narrated audiobooks, Amazon is also bringing titles made through Audible’s Audiobook Creation Exchange (ACX), starting with US subscribers first.

Why this matters?

For authors, this opens up a free way to reach more readers without the hassle of hiring narrators. For you as a subscriber, it means way more audiobook variety showing up inside a subscription at the same cost.

If AI narration isn’t your thing, Audible and library apps like Libby still offer fully human-narrated and dramatized audiobooks, so you’re not locked into robot voices if you’d rather keep things traditional.
