For North American RPG enthusiasts, Terranigma has been a white whale when it comes to getting an official release in the region. The 1995 JRPG was released only on the Super Nintendo in Japan and PAL territories, but it is finally making its way to North American shores next year.

Terranigma is being ported and enhanced for modern consoles in early 2027. The game, originally developed by Quintet and published by Enix (in Japan) and Nintendo (PAL), is an action RPG and the third entry in the developer’s unofficial “Soul Blazer trilogy”, following 1992’s Soul Blazer and 1993’s Illusion of Gaia. The story centers on a boy named Ark, and follows his generations-spanning quest to resurrect life on Earth after the planet’s decimation in an apocalyptic battle between divine forces.

Terranigma is often acclaimed as a masterpiece for its storytelling, soundtrack, and fast-paced gameplay. Developer Clear River Games helms this modern release and states in a press release that the re-release features “a host of upgrades, tweaks and bonus features, designed to make the best, better still and provide an ideal point of entry for modern gamers.” The studio does not specify what these upgrades are, but has enlisted the help of Terranigma’s original artist, Kamui Fujiwara, to create new in-game designs and key art, and to offer feedback on the re-release’s production.

“30 years ago, Terranigma was released on the SNES,” Fujiwara writes in a press release. “Now, at long last it will be available once again on console and PC, digital and physical. It may not be exactly the same as it was back then, but I’m sincerely delighted about it making its return to the current gaming environment. During the original’s development, I was involved with designing not only the characters, but the world too, and even some of the game settings as well. I hope the themes of god and humanity, creation and destruction, and the atmosphere of the world itself resonate with today’s players too. Not as a relic of the past, but as a living, breathing work. This moment has been long awaited and now it is finally here. I hope you will enjoy it with all your heart.”

Terranigma is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC in early 2027.
