Scroll through any app for five minutes, and you’ll find someone maxxing something. Their skin, their sleep, their protein intake, even their Friday night on the couch. That little suffix has been everywhere this year, and now it has a trophy to show for it. In a recent announcement, Dictionary.com named maxxing its 2026 Word of the Year.
What are people actually doing when they’re maxxing?
In Dictionary.com’s words, it’s about going all in on something and trying to make it the best it can be. The word usually gets stuck onto something else to show the goal. Looksmaxxing is all about appearance. Tokenmaxxing is when workers lean on AI tools as much as possible.
Nonnamaxxing borrows the habits of an Italian grandmother, which might be the best version of all. The list keeps growing, too. Dictionary.com even joked that “there are now a lot of maxxings.”
How did a gaming term end up here?
According to Dictionary.com, the roots go back to max and maximize. Gamers then gave us min-maxing, where you pour everything into a character’s strengths and stop worrying about the weak spots. Over time, the maxing part drifted into other words, picked up a bonus x, and caught on in Reddit threads and message boards.
Looksmaxxing led the way. Dictionary.com says it was already floating around in 2015, mostly among young guys in certain online circles. Interest exploded this year once the media started covering it, and new spinoffs kept showing up month after month.
What pushed it over the top, the site explains, is that people now use maxxing without attaching it to anything. You can just be maxxing, full stop. The fun part is how flexible it is. Some folks mean it sincerely and really are trying to level up. Others use it to poke fun at hustle culture. Both feel very 2026.
