BMW Motorrad’s Vision K18 has made its debut at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, looking like a motorcycle from a future where machines are still loud, oversized, and a little unhinged. It is only a one-off concept for now, with no price or production plan attached. The whole concept revolves around a 1,800cc inline-six engine, which dominates the bike’s design.

What gives the Vision K18 its sci-fi menace?

BMW has taken the six-cylinder touring format and stripped it down into something much more aggressive. The Vision K18 puts the engine front and center, then reinforces the theme with six intakes, six tailpipes, and six LED headlights.

I can see a bit of futuristic Honda Gold Wing in the proportions, but the personality feels closer to Judge Dredd’s Lawmaster. The Vision K18 is long, low, and wide, with exposed mechanical parts that make it look more like a machine built for pursuit than relaxed touring.

BMW says the Vision K18’s shape is inspired by high-speed aircraft such as the Concorde, which explains the long profile and arrow-like stance. For the body, BMW has used hand-formed aluminum and forged carbon, along with flame-sprayed surfaces that give parts of the bike a raw, heat-treated look. The side panel is formed as a single piece and runs beyond two meters.

How brutal does BMW’s inline-six concept sound?

The concept also gets a hydraulically lowerable suspension, an actively cooled headlight, and a front intake that sends air through six tubes to a central air filter. BMW has still not shared power figures or weight. Given that this behemoth has a huge inline-six engine, a long body, a wide rear section, and enough metalwork to make it look more like a rolling sculpture than a regular motorcycle, I really want to know how heavy it is.

BMW has, however, let us hear it, and the official audio clip makes the Vision K18 sound as aggressive as it looks. It is deafeningly loud, sharp, and far from the polished hum you might expect from a long-distance six-cylinder tourer. It is hard to imagine this thing passing quietly through any place.
