Apple’s launch streak continues. After a series of product announcements across its iPhone, Mac, and iPad lineups, the company has now turned its attention to audio with the launch of the second-generation AirPods Max 2.

What’s new with the AirPods Max 2?

The new headphones build on the original AirPods Max introduced in 2020, bringing updated internals and several new software features in a familiar design. At the center of the upgrade is the Apple H2 chip, the same chip that powers the latest AirPods Pro model. Apple says the new chip enables improvements in computational audio, delivering better sound processing and more advanced noise control.

According to Apple, the AirPods Max 2 feature improved Active Noise Cancellation that can block more background noise compared to the previous model. Transparency mode has also been refined to sound more natural when letting outside audio in, making it easier to stay aware of surroundings without removing the headphones.

The H2 chip also enables several intelligent features, such as Adaptive Audio, which automatically adjusts the balance between noise cancellation and transparency depending on the environment. Conversation Awareness, on the other hand, can lower the volume of music when the user starts speaking, while Voice Isolation helps improve call quality by reducing background noise during phone or video calls.

What other features does the AirPods Max 2 offer?

Apple has also added support for lossless audio playback when the headphones are connected via USB-C. The company says the AirPods Max 2 can deliver 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio when paired with compatible Apple devices, offering higher fidelity sound for music and video content. Other notable features include loud sound reduction, a camera remote functionality, and a personalized volume feature that “automatically fine-tunes the listening experience” based on the user’s preferences.

In terms of design, the overall look remains familiar. The headphones keep the aluminum ear cups, breathable mesh headband, and Digital Crown control that debuted on the original model. Battery life is rated for up to 20 hours of listening with Active Noise Cancellation enabled.

The AirPods Max 2 will go up for pre-order starting March 25, with shipping set to begin early next month. The headphones are priced starting at $549, and will be available in five colors, including Blue, Purple, Midnight, Starlight, and Orange.
