WWDC 2025: macOS Tahoe 26 to Be the Last Major Software Update for Intel-Powered Macs

Apple previewed macOS Tahoe 26 for Mac devices at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2025 on June 11. During the annual conference held at Apple Park in California, the tech giant confirmed that the latest macOS software update will be the final macOS version to support Intel-powered Macs. This marks the end of support as Apple fully transitions to its in-house silicon chips. The Intel-based Macs are confirmed to receive security updates for a few more years.

Apple to Drop Support for Intel Macs Next Year

During the WWDC 2025 Platforms State of the Union, Apple announced that macOS Tahoe 26 will be the last version of the macOS operating system to support Macs equipped with Intel CPUs. Macs powered by Intel processors will receive new features in macOS Tahoe 26. Some features, like Apple Intelligence, are exclusive to Macs running on Apple Silicon chips.

Macs with Intel CPUs will get security updates for three more years. However, by 2028, Intel Macs will officially exit the Apple ecosystem.

Starting in 2026, only Macs with Apple’s M1 or newer chips will be eligible for the full feature set of macOS 27 and beyond. Intel-powered Macs that are compatible with macOS Tahoe 26 include the 16-inch MacBook Pro (2019), the 13-inch MacBook Pro (2020), the iMac model launched in 2020, and Mac Pro launched in 2019.

Apple introduced its first M-series chip in 2020, marking a departure from Intel. Since then, all new Apple hardware has come with Apple-designed chips. The company states that it completed the transition to Apple silicon across its entire product lineup two years ago.

Besides the macOS Tahoe 26 update, Apple also showcased the new operating systems for iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and other devices during the WWDC 2025 keynote. The macOS Tahoe 26, iOS 26, watchOS 26, and iPadOS 26 updates will be available this fall as a free software update. They are currently available for testing through the Apple Developer Program.
