God of War: Laufey is one of the most highly anticipated games out there, and anyone who has been loyal to the PlayStation side of the console wars is waiting for the latest installment in the series. Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait a little longer to boot it up on your console. Earlier today, Santa Monica Studio announced that it’s delaying the game, which is now expected to land on May 20 next year.
The studio didn’t give a reason for the delay, but says it will use the extra time to further polish and optimize the game, so it offers players the best experience possible. Below is the full statement released by the studio:
Since the reveal of God of War Laufey in June, we’ve been deeply grateful to see so much excitement for Faye’s journey through the Everywhen. We don’t take for granted the trust placed in the studio to make an extraordinary experience worthy of the passion and dedication of our fans.
With this in mind, we’ve made the decision to delay God of War Laufey’s release to May 20th, 2027. We will make the most of each moment until then by putting in the finishing touches and pushing the game to its fullest potential.
On behalf of everyone on the team, we appreciate your patience and we’ll be back to share more updates soon! — Santa Monica Studio
God of War: Laufey was originally expected to release on February 16 next year. It follows the journey of Laufey, the magic-wielding wife of Kratos, the Greek god and protagonist of the legendary God of War series. Ever since the game was announced and Sony released an extended gameplay reveal, it has attracted plenty of praise as well as criticism. There has been plenty of online debate about the character design, as well as the overall storyline of a series that has so far been carried by the hulking, angry Greek god Kratos.
Thankfully, as the industry heads toward a future where discs are a thing of the past, Santa Monica Studio has already confirmed that God of War: Laufey will get a disc release. Whether the game receives the same kind of love as the Kratos-led entries remains to be seen. Separately, a TV series based on the games is already in production, with former wrestler and Hollywood star Dave Bautista playing Kratos.
