The Nintendo Switch 2 has reportedly been jailbroken, and AI helped crack the code. Developer Sammy Hajhamid, aka pepsipu, used OpenAI’s Codex to help exploit the console, even modding Mario Kart World with the likes of Peter Griffin and Hatsune Miku. But before anyone celebrates an unlocked Nintendo playground, there’s a catch: the exploit is tethered, not a full-blown custom firmware jailbreak.

AI helped crack the Switch 2, but it wasn’t a one-click job

Pepsipu’s technical write-up describes a project that took roughly two weeks of work. Codex helped investigate vulnerabilities and develop parts of the exploit, while the developer built a setup that allowed AI agents to interact with the consoles and inspect their output. The process involved several security mechanisms and required substantial human effort. The developer also clarified that the initial attempt to achieve code execution through the Switch 2’s WebKit browser did not succeed. The eventual breakthrough involved a different route, including exploiting the console’s filesystem service. So, AI played a meaningful role, but this wasn’t a chatbot being told to hack a console and returning a finished jailbreak before lunch.

The result is called ns2jb, and its capabilities go beyond simply adding funny characters to Mario Kart World. According to the developer, it allows native code to run with the permissions of ordinary system modules and the built-in filesystem module. That creates opportunities for homebrew development, game modification, save-file backups, reverse engineering, and further security research. The exploit reportedly works on firmware version 23.0.1, which the developer identified as the latest version at the time of publication. It’s an important foothold for the modding community, but it doesn’t mean every Switch 2 owner can now install whatever software they want with a few button presses.

The jailbreak has limitations, and Nintendo could close the door

There’s one big catch: the jailbreak is tethered, meaning it stops working after a reboot and needs to be triggered again. It’s a promising breakthrough, but not the permanent, no-strings-attached jailbreak modders are hoping for. Then there’s SmileBASIC 4, a game-building tool that costs around $25 on the US eShop. A vulnerability in its Switch 1 version helped the research, but buying it isn’t a guaranteed ticket to jailbreaking the Switch 2. Nintendo could also pull the software from its store, potentially closing off that route.

Still, this is a meaningful crack in Nintendo’s security, and AI helped make it happen. Modders could eventually get more homebrew apps, deeper game tweaks, and greater control over the console, but there’s plenty of work left before that becomes reality. The bigger takeaway is that AI isn’t magically cracking every console while developers kick back with popcorn. It’s becoming another weapon in the researcher’s toolkit, helping turn weeks of painstaking security work into tangible progress. The Switch 2’s walls have a crack in them, but Mario isn’t handing out the master keys just yet.
