Microsoft might be cleaning up its Surface lineup. According to Windows Central, Microsoft has stopped manufacturing the Surface Go and Surface Laptop Go lines, with no successors currently planned. Surface Go 4 and Surface Laptop Go 3 are reportedly out of stock in most places, and once remaining retail stock is gone, that may be it.

If this is true, then we are looking at the end of the brand’s budget Surface PCs as Microsoft has plenty of premium Windows hardware.

Why I’ll miss the Surface Go

The Surface Go was never the fastest Windows device in the room. Early models were underpowered, the keyboard could feel cramped, and the price could climb quickly once you added a Type Cover and better storage. But the vision was solid. A small, well-built Windows tablet with a kickstand, pen support, and a real desktop operating system had a very specific appeal.

It could be a travel machine that could double as a couch computer. Your tiny work backup system, which basically competed with Apple’s entry-level iPads. It was the closest thing to a truly compact Windows tablet with some personality.

The replacement is bigger and pricier

The problem is that Microsoft now seems focused on a narrower Surface family. Looking at the current portfolio, Microsoft is offering just the Surface Pro and Surface Laptop, which are spread across different sizes and power levels. Th 12-inch Surface Pro does technically have the same vibe as the old Surface Go, but it is significantly more expensive.

The last Surface Go 4 released for $579, which is hard to imagine in the current day due to the RAMmageddon. Keep in mind that Microsoft hasn’t officially confirmed this yet. But with the focus now being on the Microsoft Surface Ultra, with the new RTX Spark chip, a budget Surface seems unlikely.
