With Grand Theft Auto 6 now just months away, Rockstar Games is giving longtime Grand Theft Auto 5 players a reason to revisit Los Santos. The company has announced that owners of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of GTA 5 will receive a free upgrade to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of the game.

The move comes as Rockstar ramps up excitement for GTA 6, which is currently scheduled to launch on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles. Previously, upgrading from the older console versions to the current-generation release required a separate purchase, typically costing around $10. Beginning Thursday, however, eligible players will be able to move to the newer version at no additional cost.

PC players are also getting an upgrade. Rockstar is allowing users to move from the older Legacy version of GTA 5 to the newer Enhanced edition, which includes a range of graphical and technical improvements.

The upgrade adds support for ray tracing, faster loading times through SSD optimization, improved audio features, DualSense controller functionality, and other enhancements designed to take advantage of modern gaming hardware.

Rockstar adds new content alongside technical improvements

The free upgrade is not limited to visual enhancements. Players who move to the latest version will gain access to features that were previously unavailable on older versions of the game. One of the most notable additions is Hao’s Special Works (HSW), a customization system that allows select vehicles to receive performance upgrades and enhanced tuning options.

The update also includes Career Progress tracking, additional rewards, and various quality-of-life improvements aimed at both GTA Online veterans and returning players. Rockstar has also published a migration guide to help players transfer Story Mode saves and GTA Online progress between versions. This ensures users can continue their existing adventures without starting over.

For players who have spent years building characters, businesses, and collections in GTA Online, seamless migration is likely to be one of the most important aspects of the upgrade.

GTA Online remains a huge business for Rockstar

The timing of the free upgrade is unlikely to be a coincidence. Despite launching in 2013, GTA 5 continues to be one of the most successful games ever created. Its online component remains enormously profitable for Rockstar, generating revenue through Shark Cards and other in-game purchases.

According to recently leaked financial information, GTA Online was reportedly earning more than $1 million per day between September 2025 and April 2026. That level of engagement helps explain why Rockstar continues to invest in keeping the game fresh nearly 13 years after launch.

The free upgrade could also serve another purpose. Many fans believe Rockstar wants as many players as possible on the latest version of GTA Online before GTA 6 arrives. Some have speculated that progress, rewards, or online features could eventually carry over into Rockstar’s next-generation online experience.

For now, Rockstar is focused on giving existing players a smoother, better-looking version of GTA 5 while they wait for the company’s biggest release yet. After more than a decade on the market, GTA 5 is proving once again that it still has plenty of life left before GTA 6 finally takes center stage.
