After years of rumors, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is officially officially getting a remake for Nintendo Switch 2 and it is coming in 2026, sometime later this year.

Ocarina of Time was originally released in 1998 for the Nintendo 64. The game was a critical and commercial success and is often cited as one the best reviewed games of all time, so the fervor for a remake is not unexpected.

The new trailer is minimal, beginning with a voice over from an unknown narrator giving a rundown on the Kokiri, who Link lives amongst at the start of the game. Each child has a fairy, but there’s one boy who doesn’t have a fairy of his own. The trailer then fades to a young, sleeping Link, who you can see in the image below. He stirs in his sleep, a Triforce symbol glows on his hand, and a modern logo for Ocarina of Time appears on the screen. Despite not seeing much more than that, the game is due to launch in 2026.

This, of course, is not the first time Ocarina of Time has been re-released following its initial launch. Ahead of the release of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker in 2002, Nintendo offered reservation customers a pair of GameCube discs that contained a port of Ocarina of Time as well as the not-released-in-North America Master Quest, which rearranged the puzzles in Ocarina of Time. There was also The Legend of Zelda: Collector’s Edition, a GameCube game compilation that included The Legend of Zelda, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, Ocarina of time, Majora’s Mask, and a demo for Wind Waker.

Ocarina of Time was also made available on the Wii and Wii U Virtual Consoles, and the game is currently available for Switch and Switch 2 as part of the Nintendo Online subscription service.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (2011)

The game has been ported to nearly every Nintendo platform since its original release, but this will actually be the second time Ocarina of Time has been fully remade. In 2011, Ocarina of Time was rebuilt for the 3DS with updated graphics, motion controls, and stereoscopic 3D visuals by developer Grezzo. That version of the game also included Master Quest.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026. For more on today’s Direct, check out the news about Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, and the new Pokopia update. You can also read the full recap of every announcement here.
