Android’s latest Canary release lays the groundwork to help you seamlessly switch to iPhone

Switching between iPhone and Android devices has always been a notoriously messy and time-consuming process, often leaving users with missing app data, incomplete media transfers, and lost messages. Thankfully, Apple and Google have teamed up to make the migration process more seamless.

Earlier this year, Apple published documentation for its new AppMigrationKit framework, which will enable smoother app-data transfers between iPhones and Android phones. Now, Google has introduced a similar solution in the latest Android Canary release to help streamline data transfers between Android and iOS devices.

According to 9to5Google, the Android Canary 2512 (ZP11.251121.010) includes this new migration solution, but it’s still a work in progress. Google and Apple have confirmed that the new transfer method will be available during device setup once it goes live. However, the report doesn’t reveal exactly how the feature works.

Android Authority adds that the Canary build includes a new “Copy data” button within the Pair with iPhone or iPad option in the Google services settings. This button reportedly initiates the new wireless data transfer method that connects the Android phone to an iPhone or iPad using a unique session ID and passcode to enable seamless data transfers.

For now, neither Google nor Apple has confirmed when this new solution will go live. The feature will likely surface in future iOS 26 developer beta and Android beta builds before launch, which is expected to shed more light on the transfer process. Until then, users will have to stick with Apple’s Move to iOS app and Google’s Android Switch app when switching from Android to iPhone and vice versa.

Once this new data migration solution is live, switching between Apple and Google’s ecosystems could become as simple as restoring from a backup on the same platform. It could dramatically reduce switching friction and give users the freedom to easily switch between iPhones and Android phones without worrying about what they might lose in the process.
